Dartmoor: This is the area's most famous moor, where wildlife meets history and culture. The heritage of Dartmoor goes all the way back to Neolithic times and this living, breathing, working landscape is just as rich and fascinating now as it was hundreds of years ago.
Dartmoor served as the inspiration for Conan Doyles classic Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of Baskervilles, and was also the background for the Hollywood blockbuster film, War Horse.
With 368 square miles to explore, you can walk for hours without seeing another soul, or you can visit some of the renowned attractions - such as Haytor and the interesting Dartmoor Prison Museum. If you're seeking a bit more of a thrill, why not cycle the Drakes Trail or encounter the herds of pure-breed Dartmoor ponies that wander freely along the trails. Dartmoor can easily be reached from many holiday cottages in Devon and it is certainly worth exploration.
The English Riviera: The seaside town of Torquay is the gateway to the English Riviera and is simply bursting with maritime history. In the early 19th century, the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars (while the navy was anchored in the bay). Later, the area became increasingly popular with the crme de la crme of Victorian society and the towns fame spread like wildfire.
Today, the picturesque town plays host to a number of sporting events and festivals, including the Rivieras very own regatta. For those looking to take part in some sporting events of their own, Torquay is the perfect area for canoeing the coves, running alongside the water or participating in the unusual sport of coasteering. Located near many holiday cottages in Devon, Torquay is ideal for a serene sabbatical as well as a sports-oriented getaway.
South Devon: The south of the county is home to some of Englands most beautiful coastlines. Whether you are looking to engage in watersports or simply take strolls along the beach, there is no right way to enjoy this gorgeous area.
With a landscape of rolling hills and a backdrop of Dartmoor the south has a unique character; it has become home to many artists and musicians who turn to its natural beauty for inspiration.
Art galleries, music festivals and alternative lifestyle centres can be found throughout the area, all within walking or driving distance of many holiday cottages in Devon.
