Going the Distance | Feather Magazine

Communication is key to keep long-distance relationships alive.

Trying to continue a college relationship after graduation? Or are trying to maintain a new relationship during the transition period into post-graduation life? We all know long distance is rough, but we have some advice for you to deal with the tension that may erupt as you find your own paths and the responsibilities associated with relationships in the real world.

Plan Your Time: It?s so easy to get caught up in the busy lifestyle of a student or post-grad, and there are always going to be a million things to do. Instead of letting daily responsibilities overshadow your relationship, make sure to set out times in advance for you and your beau to catch up, like Skype dates every Wednesday or always talking on the phone before bed. Setting up communication in advance will provide something to look forward to.

Set Boundaries: It?s inevitable that bars or parties will be part of a twenty-something?s life, and navigating the social scene may be weird with a boyfriend who?s far away. Set careful boundaries in advance about what is and what isn?t okay, so no one ends up feeling hurt or betrayed.

Pre-Write Arguments: You can probably already imagine the potential arguments over making time for each other. Anticipate them and make sure to discuss how you feel about everything well in advance so when frustration does come up, you?re already informed and know where your partner is coming from.

Talk It Out: The worst thing that people in a long-distance relationship can do is keep their emotions to themselves. Create an open forum between you two at all times, so you can address every problem and maintain a strong connection as well as intimacy between you.

Keep the Love Alive: Just because you?re together doesn?t mean you can?t be romantic! Send flirty text messages (minus sexting?keep it classy, Feather Girls ;]) or loving care packages, have dinner dates over Skype and make sure visits are particularly special. If you can keep the romance and connection going, you and your beau can certainly make it through anything.
