China Rebuffs Detailed Report on Its US Hacking Escapades

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei reportedly said at a briefing on Tuesday that China's military was not involved in any recent cyberhacking. His comments were apparently in response to allegations in a new report by Mandiant. Among many other findings in the report is the existence of a 12-story white office tower said to house a PLA cyberwarrior unit.

Did GOP Antics Drive Johanns Out?

The senior senator from Nebraska, Mike Johanns, announced his retirement today. It's a major surprise. He's only 62 years old, and he's serving his first term. He's a giant in Nebraska politics, having served as the mayor of Lincoln, the governor, and as one of George W. Bush's secretaries of agriculture. He could probably remain in the Senate for as long as he wants to, but he has decided to leave. In a letter to his constituents, he gave no specific reason for his decision not to run for reelection. He pointed out that he's spent thirty-two years in public service and that that is enough.

Now, this is pure speculation, but I think it is not unlikely that Johanns wants out of Washington because of how Chuck Hagel is being treated by his colleagues in the Senate. Johanns replaced Hagel in the upper chamber, and they are friends. Johanns announced early on that he would vote to confirm Hagel as Secretary of Defense, and he was one of only four Republicans to oppose a filibuster of Hagel's nomination (Orrin Hatch voted 'present').

No doubt, there are plenty of other reasons for members of Congress to be frustrated and disgusted, but there is a straw that will break every camel's back. Perhaps watching Sen.Ted Cruz (R-TX) accuse Hagel of taking money from the North Koreans was that straw. Maybe it was watching the way McCain disrespected his former buddy. I doubt that Johanns will ever talk about it, but he can't be happy about how Hagel has been treated.

I have a feeling that things have grown too toxic on a national level for the normally polite Nebraskans. First Hagel quit, then Ben Nelson, and now Mike Johanns. The state is certainly conservative, but it's also has the only unicameral and nonpartisan state legislature.

NFL Combine To Feature New Aptitude Test Supplementing The Wonderlic

NFL Combine To Feature New Aptitude Test Supplementing The WonderlicThe NFL scouting combine begins February 23 in Indianapolis and, beginning this year, will feature a new "aptitide test" to work in conjunction with the controversial Wonderlic test. Jeff Foster, president of National Football Scouting told Albert Breer of NFL.com that the new test will be introduced to participants this year and is not meant to replace the Wonderlic, merely supplement it.

According to Foster, the league spent time developing the new test with a university professor. The hope is that "it's something that's a little more evolved than the Wonderlic."

A university professor. That's pretty serious.

The new "aptitude" test shows that football talent evaluators are perhaps acknowledging the uselessness of the wonderlic in, you know, evaluating talent. However, it still ignores the basic fact that the only test prospective NFL players need to complete is below. Feel free to use, it NFL.

Are you good at football? Please show your work.

The Old Sugar Land Club House: More From The Dierks Family ...

I've borrowed more photos from the Dierks family scrapbook.? Thank you, Margaret Phillips.??

When I first saw the following picture, I noticed a couple of things that led me to think it showed construction of a home on Imperial Blvd.??

After a closer look, I think it shows the construction of a Dierks home on the south side of Highway-90A near the present location of the Windstream and old Frost Bank buildings.? I've learned there were two Dierks family homes in that area; I can't be sure which one this is, but if I'm correct, that's Highway-90A behind the barbed wire fence.? The Salvage Buildings are in the background.? It's hard to see, but there's a billboard promoting Imperial Sugar in front of the buildings.

Here are three pictures of the dredging operations south of Highway-90A.? I don't have an exact date, but it's sometime in the early 1920s.? Although it's not a good picture, you can see in the last one (which was probably taken in or around Alkire Lake), they had to dredge some very marshy areas with primitive equipment.
