CHICAGO (AP) ? A late winter storm packing up to 10 inches of snow sent authorities in weather-hardened Chicago into action Tuesday to prevent a repeat of scenes from two years ago, when a blizzard stranded hundreds of people in cars and buses.

The storm rolling into Chicago was expected to dump the most snow the city has seen since the 2011 blizzard. The storm system started Sunday in Montana, hit the Dakotas and Minnesota on Monday and then barreled through Wisconsin and Illinois on its way to Washington, where it was expected late Tuesday night.

Even in Chicago, some were caught off guard by the last gasp from Old Man Winter.

"I thought it was just media hype," said Stacia Copplin, who was fleeing her financial services job shortly after noon and walking through the blast of wet snow to catch a train to the suburbs.

Schools were closed in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, where officials urged caution on snow-slickened roads. In western Wisconsin, a semi-trailer slid off a snow-covered interstate near Menomonie and into the Red Cedar River, killing one person. Authorities said they were searching for a second person, believed to be a passenger.

Airlines canceled more than 1,100 flights at Chicago airports, prompting delays and closures at others around the region. Airlines along the storm's projected path were already cutting flights too, including about 450 on Wednesday, mostly at Dulles and Reagan National airports in the Washington area, according to FlightAware.com. Daniel Baker, CEO of the flight-tracking service, said he expected the numbers to rise.

In Chicago, officials were working to keep Lake Shore Drive safe. A February 2011 blizzard embarrassed the city by doing the unthinkable ? shutting down the iconic lakefront thoroughfare at rush hour, entombing hundreds of cars and buses and trapping passengers overnight.

The city government has taken steps to prevent a repeat. Among the new procedures, officials have opened a removable barrier in the median of the four-lane roadway. Plows and salt-spreading trucks are in easier striking distance of Lake Shore Drive, and they started treating the roadway hours before snow began falling.

"We are prepared as a city to deal with this snow," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel at Chicago's emergency snow command center, where officials keep an eye a bank of monitors feeding in real-time images from 1,500 cameras and data from roadway sensors.

The city's full fleet of nearly 300 plows was out in force, but Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Charles Williams expected a tough afternoon commute. He said it will be easier for plows to move around overnight to get roads clear by morning.

Jennie Reed: 2012 Olympic Silver medalist

Born and raised in the greater Seattle area,?Olympic medalist Jennie Reed?was introduced to track cycling at the?Marymoor?Velodrome?by her father when she was 16. She was hooked immediately.

She participated in her first Junior National Championships that same year and won two National titles.

She then continued on to become two-time US Female Cycling Athlete of the Year (2011 & 1998), 14-time National Champion, 2008 World Champion in the Women?s?Keirin, and earn 24 International Track Cycling medals.

After a highly successful 12-year career Jennie was ready to move on, go back to school and spend quality time with her family in the Puget Sound region.

But then in 2009, changes to the Olympic Track Cycling Schedule were announced and Jennie?s old teammate and training partner, Sarah Hammer, called her asking if she had anything left in her tank. Sarah wanted a chance to compete in the new Olympic event ? the Team Pursuit ?and she wanted Jennie to join her. Jennie deliberated; in order to become a Team Pursuit rider she would have to transition into an endurance rider after have been a sprinter for 12 years. But the intrigue of attempting to do something which she wasn?t sure was physically possible as well as the allure of becoming part of a team after racing as an individual for so many years, was too big to resist so Jennie returned to the track?

Jill Kintner: 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist

Competitive in BMX, Mountain Cross, Downhill, Slalom and Pumptrack racing, Jill Kintner is one of the most dominant female dirt cyclists in the world. She is a two-time USA Downhill Champion, three-time UCI 4X World Champion, four-time US National Champion in 4X, USA Slalom Champion, Olympic bronze medalist, and US National and World Champion in BMX.

Born in Burien, Wash, Jill began riding BMX when she was just seven years old.

?I was the only girl in our neighborhood, and I would go on these bike missions with the boys all the time,? she remembers.

She started competing, and claimed her first national title and sponsor in 1990 at just nine years old. ?She turned pro in 1995 at the tender age of 14 and went on to build an impressive BMX career. After earning more than 70 wins including the NBL National Series and ABA World Championship pro titles, she began looking for a new challenge, a quest that would continue to drive her throughout her cycling career.

Kintner jumped into the emerging sport of mountain bike 4 Cross (4X), a fast-moving sprint down a winding, varied course with four riders racing head to head.

She quickly fought her way to the top, taking her first U.S. National 4X title in her rookie year. The wins piled up and she virtually dominated the sport for years. Among her countless 4X podiums, Kintner collected three UCI World Championship titles, 15 World Cup wins, 2 World Cup overall title, and four U.S. National titles.

Jill came out of BMX retirement in early 2007 with the objective of being included in the US BMX team for the 2008 Olympics.

She successfully claimed a spot on the team and didn?t disappoint them, returning from the Beijing Olympic wearing a bronze medal.

Driven by a desire to challenge herself and deepen her skills, Kintner is now fiercely competitive in a third discipline, downhill mountain bike racing. She has already claiming two consecutive Downhill U.S. National Championships in her first two years in the downhill scene, and there is no way of telling what else she might accomplish!

Megan Fisher: 2012 Paralympic?Gold and Silver medalist

Megan Fisher is a lifelong athlete who never let her injury, a below knee amputation resulting from a horrific car accident, slow her down.? In fact, Megan says that she has ?done more with one leg than she ever would have done with two.?

Megan is an accomplished paratriathlete and cyclists whose accolades include six world champion titles and a 2012 Paralympic?Gold and Silver medal.

Megan began representing Team USA in international cycling and?ITU?Triathlon competitions five years ago.? In the past three years, she has focused primarily on cycling in preparation for the?Paralympic?Games.? Megan has also competed in XTERRA?Off-Road Triathlons where she won two world championship titles as the first female challenged athlete to ever attempt such an endeavor.

Megan also loves mountain biking and is looking forward to the day when mountain biking is included as a?Paralympic?sport.

When she is not training or competing, Megan is busy completing her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at the University of Washington in Seattle.

?I lost my election because of my campaign," Romney said on "Fox News Sunday" in his first television interview since his November defeat, "not because of what anyone else did."

The former Massachusetts governor refused place blame on Christie, who some Republicans say elevated Obama in his embrace of the president in the wake of the storm.

Romney said his inability to win over black and Hispanic voters--and the damage done by those disastrous "47 percent" comments--ultimately derailed his White House bid.

Ann Romney, though, pointed the finger at the fourth estate. ?It was not just the campaign?s fault," Ann Romney said. "I believe it was the media's fault as well, in that he was not being given a fair shake--that people weren?t allowed to really see him for who he was. ... I?m happy to blame the media.?

She added: ?I totally believe at this moment, if Mitt were there in the office, that we would not be facing sequestration right now."

Mitt Romney said President Obama has failed to lead on the sequester.

"He didn?t think the sequester would happen," he said. "It is happening. To date, what we?ve seen is the president out campaigning to the American people, doing rallies around the country, flying around the country and berating Republicans and blaming and pointing. Now, what does that do? That causes the Republicans to retrench and to put up a wall and to fight back.?

On election night, Romney said, he was "convinced" he'd win the election--until Ohio went in Obama's favor.

?It was a slow recognition until ultimately when the Ohio numbers began coming in and they were disappointing,? he said. ?By 8 or 9 o?clock, it was pretty clear that we were not going to win.?

Romney, who has avoided the press since his loss to Obama, likened the election and its aftermath to an amusement park ride.

"We were on a roller coaster, exciting and thrilling, ups and downs," Romney said. "But the ride ends. And then you get off. And it's not like, oh, can't we be on a roller coaster the rest of our life? It's like, no, the ride's over."

Seacrest dodges wedding question at 'Idol' event

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ryan Seacrest can tell you lot about the evolution of "American Idol" over the last twelve seasons, but the host is a bit more reluctant to discuss the evolution of his relationship with actress Julianne Hough.

When asked by The Associated Press if there was a wedding date in his future, Seacrest casually responded: "Are you getting married?"

Seacrest and Hough have been together since the spring of 2010.

After a few playful rounds of "Are you?" banter on the subject, he decided to call it a day.

Seacrest made the comments Friday while promoting "Idol Across America," a relay of the "American Idol" microphone across the country, taking a page from the Olympic torch relay.

As for the prospect of the microphone making it in one piece, Seacrest says if not, "I'm sure there's one in a holster standing by if it breaks."
